Garam Masala Powder

Sure! You can buy this powder at the store. But you know that taste you remember from when you were a kid eating your mom’s home cooked food? Well, that taste came to you because your mom probably made her own home blend of Garam Masala powder. Literally translated, this would say Hot Mixture. From the ingredients on the screen you can see why that is so. Watch the video for more on how to make the mixture. Feel free to experiment by varying the proportions but don’t forget to check with your mom first. This one will surely spice up your life!

Ingredients for Garam Masala Powder:

Black Pepper Corns – 50 grams
Cinnamon Sticks – 50 grams
Cloves – 50 grams
Poppy Seeds (Khus Khus) – 10 grams
Mace (Javitri) – 10 grams

Method:

1.    Heat a pan for a minute on high heat and bring it down to medium to roast spices.
2.    Add Cinnamon & roast on medium heat until fragrant, approx. 90 seconds.
3.    Add Black Pepper Corns & roast until fragrant, approx. 70 seconds.
4.    Add Cloves & roast until fragrant, approx. 10 seconds.
5.    Add Mace (Javitri) & roast until fragrant, approx. 15 seconds.
6.    Add Poppy seeds (Khus Khus) & roast until fragrant, approx. 40 seconds.
7.    Spread out evenly on a plate to cool.
8.    Grind after completely cooled.
9.    Sieve, grind the stubborn remains, sieve, repeat!
10.     Store it in an airtight container and use when needed to make different Indian curries & gravies.
